Whether you stick plates in a carrier or not, they have become more popular than ever. Here is my personal set up.
It’s a Sentry carrier from AR500. Right now they are running anywhere from 50.00 to 80.00. They WILL fit standard plates in the front and back. One of the draw backs to this carrier is lack of side protection.

Middle is a suspension sling I cut up to middle sling weapons if I need to.
3 mags in single shingle, one oddball mag in Taco. The reason I put it on the left is that when I drop my weapon, that is where it naturally “falls”, right on the edge of the TACO and on the flat spot of the carrier.
This is my personal set up. I AM NOT AN EXPERT. This is what is comfortable for me.
